Schools shut and roads closed as snow returns to Scotland

HEAVY snowfalls returned to northern Scotland today.

Three people were treated for injuries at Dr Grays Hospital in Elgin after a crash on the A96 this morning. Police said one person was seriously injured while two others received treatment for minor wounds.

Police attended crashes on the A90 at Bridge of Muchalls and Marywell.

In the Grampian area the A941 Dufftown to Rhynie road was closed due to drifting snow while the B974 Banchory to Fettercairn route was shut due to heavy snow and in Tayside the A93 was closed at Spittal of Glenshee.

Thirty-two schools in the Aberdeenshire Council area were closed or partially closed due to the winter weather.

The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for the whole of Scotland warning of widespread icy roads everywhere and heavy snow in some areas.

Northern Constabulary later advised against all travel in Shetland after road conditions deteriorated because of the heavy snow.

Police said several motorists were stranded and there had been some minor collisions.

Several accidents occurred in northern Scotland this morning.

A police officer driving a police 4x4 vehicle had to swerve to avoid a car which was apparently out of control on the A9 in Kintradwell, near Brora, at around 10.20am.

The police vehicle ended up in a field but the officer was not injured.

The same officer then saw another more serious two-vehicle crash on the same road minutes later and walked from the field to help.

An ambulance took one man to Lawson Memorial Hospital in Golspie.

The A9 was closed while emergency services dealt with the accident.

Inveravon and Knockando primary schools in Moray were closed at lunchtime because of the snow.
