Schools gain from crisis cash

PRIMARY schools and other community buildings are to undergo repairs after council chiefs agreed to spend £2 million on renovation work.

Roof work, window replacements, toilet refurbishment, and rewiring and heating upgrades will be carried out at facilities across East Lothian.

Council chiefs said every primary school as well as a number of nurseries would benefit from the spending.

In two projects, around 413,000 is set to be spent at Gullane Primary School for roof works, window replacements and toilet refurbishments, while another 435,000 is set to fund heating upgrades, rewiring and toilet refurbishments at Musselburgh Burgh Primary.

The funding will be released from the 'civic emergency earmarked reserve' and the capital fund.

Councillor Peter MacKenzie, the county's education leader, said: "Our decision to set up the repairs and renewals fund is an intelligent and cost effective way of ensuring that our school buildings are the best that they can be."
