School offers Newhaven history lesson

A MUSEUM of Newhaven is to be opened at Victoria Primary school.

The school in Newhaven Main Street is to set aside space to celebrate the fishing village's history, following the closure of the Newhaven Heritage Museum in 2006.

The Wee Museum of Newhaven will be opened on January 26 at 7pm, with an exhibition called Fishwives and School Lives.

Pupils from primary two and primary six classes worked with older members of the community to uncover the history of both the school and the village. Among those working with them was former Victoria pupil George Hackland, now 90. The project has also been aided by Edinburgh Museums learning and access curator worker Diana Morton.

The Newhaven Heritage Museum, which was located in the Fishmarket building next to the village harbour, closed when owner Forth Ports revamped the building and decided to offer the space to commercial operators.

After the Wee Museum's initial opening, the exhibition will be open to the public by pre-arrangement - call the school on 0131-476 7306 for details.
