Scheme set to show benefits of physical activity for children

A SCHEME has been launched to make parents aware of the benefits of keeping children in the Lothians physically active for at least an hour a day.

The Take Life On initiative will feature a series of adverts and posters, and it is hoped will help reduce soaring levels of obesity in youngsters.

It was revealed at the end of last year that Lothians primary ones are the fattest in Scotland.

A website will also be launched to back-up the Scottish Government-led programme.

As part of the appeal, parents will be given information on ways to encourage youngsters to exercise, and tips on how to make it seem more appealing to them.

Public health minister Shona Robison said: "The major message of Take Life On is that simple changes in our daily lives can make a real difference to our health and give us a feel-good boost.

"The health benefits for both children and adults in engaging in even light activity are well documented. The Take Life On campaign will provide parents with useful hints and advice to ensure they are best equipped to encourage their children to get active and meet the 60 minutes-a-day goal.

"We need to encourage our children to spend less time in front of the TV screen."
