San attacker stole bike

A TEENAGER jailed for assaulting takeaway driver Simon San during the attack which killed him has been convicted of joyriding on a motorbike.

Keir Rodger, 18, pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday to stealing a motorbike from Sleigh Drive, Restalrig, on January 22.

The court heard how Rodger sped through streets in Gilmerton and failed to stop at red lights.

The teenager was even spotted mounting the pavement on the bike before abandoning it.

Rodger, of Restalrig Drive, pleaded guilty to theft, driving without insurance charges and dangerous driving charges before Sheriff Alistair Noble, who deferred sentence for reports until January 9.

Rodger was freed early from a 34-month sentence for his role in the death of Mr San in August 2010. The sentence had already been reduced on appeal to 24 months.

Another teenager, John Reid, was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to culpable homicide after admitting that he had delivered the fatal blow to Mr San.

In June, Rodger was ordered to serve the rest of his sentence and a consecutive 21-month sentence, and banned from driving for three years after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car.
