Safety fears for new hospital

PLANS for a new hospital for the elderly in the city have been called into question by the health and safety executive.

It has emerged that senior health chiefs have had lengthy discussions with members about the new Royal Victoria Hospital at the Western General site.

HSE officials raised concerns over traffic management at the site, which would be busier thanks to the new hospital and car parks.

The worries were brought up as the HSE prepared to launch its investigation into a fatal accident that occurred there last year when an elderly woman was killed by an NHS Lothian vehicle.

It is understood there is no danger of HSE pulling the plug on the project.
