Safer tan could cut skin cancer risk

A SAFER, natural tan without the risks associated with too much sun could become a reality thanks to new research involving mice.

Scientists have discovered a molecular switch in the rodents that controls the process of skin pigmentation.

Blocking its action leads to a significant increase in melanin, the pigment responsible for browning the skin, research has shown.

"The primary goal would be prevention of skin cancer," said study leader Dr David Fisher, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, US.
