Runway race gets ready for take-off

A CHARITY event which sees drivers given the chance to race along the runway at Edinburgh Airport is set to take place next month.

Race the Runway sees owners of a collection of the world's top sports cars test just how fast their vehicles can go.

The 1.8km runway will be transformed into the longest drag strip in Scotland for the event, in a bid to raise funds for St Columba's Hospice in Edinburgh and the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.

This is only the second time Edinburgh Airport has closed one of its runways for the event, which raised 16,000 for the two hospices last year.

Organisers are hoping to raise 50,000 for the charities this time around and are offering 96 exclusive spots, priced at 300.

Mairi Rosko, senior fundraising manager for St Columba's Hospice, said: "If you've always dreamed of racing your car along an airport runway, or if you're looking for a unique gift idea for a car-crazy friend, then Race the Runway is the event for you.

"We're delighted to be involved again this year and we can't thank Edinburgh Airport enough for the opportunity."
