Runner dies after Scotland Kilomathon collapse

An Aberdeen man has died after collapsing during an endurance running event on Sunday.

The 25-year-old runner had been taking part in the inaugural Scotland Kilomathon over a distance 26.2 kilometres, just over 16 miles, when he collapsed in the latter stages.

He received treatment at the scene, before being taken to St John's Hospital in Livingston where he later died.

His family have been notified by Lothian and Borders Police.

GSi Events, the race organisers, said their deepest sympathies were with the runner's family and friends.

Police said there appear to be no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The event got under way at 8am, with competitors starting and finishing at the Royal Highland centre at Ingliston.

The route took competitors over the Forth Road bridge.

The 16 mile distance is seen as a stepping stone between a half-marathon and marathon.
