A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police said: “We’ve traced the person we believe to be the driver. He’s helping police with inquiries.”

Yesterday Mr Sakatiuk’s father and two brothers appealed for the driver to “do the right thing” and hand himself in to police.

“It is a terrible shock to the whole family. Stefan was a much loved son and brother, who especially loved his mum,” they said in a statement.

“We would like to be left alone to grieve and hope the driver does the right thing and hands himself in.

“Stefan will be dearly missed and we cannot believe that this has happened.”

No other vehicle was involved in the crash which happened at about 19:45 on Tuesday.
