James Collette, 32, from London, popped the question to girlfriend Lucy Sargison, 27, at Glasgow’s Ibrox Stadium, where the pair had been watching the Rugby Sevens yesterday.

Mr Collette, an IT worker, had planned the proposal weeks in advance, and as well as getting a ring specially made and asking Ms Sargison’s father for his permission, he also contacted Glasgow 2014 games chiefs.

Halfway through the event, organisers called Mr Collette and Ms Sargison, who is in the Army and recently completed an eight-month tour of Afghanistan, on to the field, under the pretence that they had been randomly selected from the audience to take part in a Commonwealth quiz.

But Mr Collette was handed a microphone and made his surprise proposal - with his girlfriend immediately replying “yes” to cheers from the crowd.

Ms Sargison said: “I was completely shocked. I had no idea and it was just amazing. I said yes straight away.”

Mr Collette said: “This has been the most exciting time in my life, Lucy and I met two years ago. We’ve been through a lot together, all of which has made our relationship stronger. She means everything to me.”
