Roof collapse at snooker club forces demolition

A SNOOKER club will be demolished after part of its roof collapsed.

Flats around the snooker club in Glasgow had to be evacuated on Thursday night.

According to initial findings, a support beam in the roof of The Q Club, which is part of a tenement block, crumpled, causing the collapse. No structural damage was done to the flats, but residents are not allowed back in their homes until the club is demolished.

Firefighters were called to the tenement block in Victoria Road, Govanhill, at around 6pm. No-one was injured.

Glasgow City Council said its building control officers have assessed the damage.

A council spokeswoman said: "Safety is paramount. Residents evacuated from flats in front of The Q Club cannot be allowed to return to their properties until the demolition is complete and their homes deemed safe."

It was not known when the demolition will start because further assessment is needed.
