Romans on the march again

ROMAN soldiers were seen marching across the Perthshire countryside yesterday, more than 1,500 years after they left the shores of Britain.

A historical group is campaigning to establish a National Roman Centre to highlight their importance in Scotland. The Antonine Guard, a living history re-enactment society, has enlisted the help of MSP Murdo Fraser, to make the case for Perth as the site.

Though it was never fully conquered or permanently occupied, Scotland has more identified Roman camps than anywhere else in Britain and Europe, and Perthshire was home to the earliest and most northerly frontier of the Roman Empire.
