Roads closed as first snow of winter falls

PARTS of the north and north-east were briefly turned into a winter wonderland yesterday following a heavy frost and light snowfalls in a number of areas.

The first snowfalls to hit the north-east since last winter arrived yesterday morning, causing problems for drivers in a number of upland areas of the Grampian Police force region.

A force spokesman said a number of routes had seen varying levels of snow. The B974 between Banchory and Fettercairn at Cairn O'Mount was closed for a time due to snow and ice causing difficult driving conditions with a number of vehicles stuck on the high level road.

Other routes affected included the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road at Temple of Fiddes near Stonehaven and the B993 Millbank to Torphins road.

Among those enjoying the first real taste of winter in the Highlands was Wendy Gordon, who was ensuring her ponies got their morning feed, despite the weather, at her farm at Garve.
