Road safety measures put in place near new homes

MEASURES are being put in place to improve road safety near new developments in Whitburn.

West Lothian Council's Executive Committee has agreed to begin the process to reduce the speed limit to 30mph from 40mph in Dixon Terrace and Polkemmet Road in Whitburn.

Further traffic calming and road safety measures are planned for the busy stretch of road.

Lothian and Borders Police have been consulted and support the proposals.

Council leader Peter Johnston said: "This area of Whitburn is undergoing substantial redevelopment at the moment, so it's essential we take steps now to improve road safety in the area.

"Our new affordable council homes for rent in Dixon Terrace are close to completion, and two other sites are also being developed close by. The road also provides access to the Heartlands development, Burnhouse Industrial estate, Whitburn Community Recycling Centre and Polkemment Business Centre.

"This move is part of a number of measures to promote road safety in this growing area, with traffic calming and a toucan crossing also in the pipeline."

The traffic order will now be advertised, with any unresolved objections reported to the Council Executive for determination before the order is confirmed.
