Road cameras cut deaths by half

SPEED and traffic light cameras in Scotland have more than halved deaths and serious injuries at their sites since being installed, official figures showed yesterday.

The average number of such casualties from 2007-09 was 56 per cent lower than the three years before cameras were introduced, according to Scotland's chief statistician. By comparison, total deaths and serious injuries on Scotland's roads in the same period were down by 38 per cent on ten years ago.

Jim Dale, director of the Scottish Safety Camera Programme, said: "This illustrates the programme is delivering excellent value for money. We are helping save lives but also reducing the financial impact of road collisions on the Scottish economy."
