In the first incident, a man, believed to be in his late 30s, was driving a white Ford Transit when it crashed shortly after midnight.

He was pronounced dead at the scene on the A941 Elgin to Rothes road at the Drumbain layby.

Two male passengers were taken to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin, where their injuries were said to be not life-threatening. All are believed to be from the Alloa area and were working in the Elgin area, Grampian Police said.

Inspector Ewan Innes, issuing an appeal for information, said: "Our inquiries are at a very early stage and it is too early to speculate on the cause of the collision."

Another man was killed in a single vehicle crash in Riverside Drive in Aberdeen at about 5.30am.

Two passengers, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital for treatment.
