Rise in repeat sex offenders

THE number of sex offenders who were convicted of further serious violent or sexual crimes in Scotland rose last year.

Despite new safeguards, the number returned to prison after breaching Sexual Offences Prevention Orders (Sopos) almost doubled, and 44 received convictions for further violent or sexual crimes, it was reported today.

Last month The Evening News revealed that more than a quarter of these orders handed out across the country were in the Lothians.

Last year 39 Sopos were handed out across Scotland, of which 11 were in the Lothians.

They included restrictions such as staying away from certain areas and avoiding contact with children.
