One home was even raided twice during the spate of break-ins, while two addresses in neighbouring Danube Street and Upper Dean Terrace were also hit.

Around 50 residents from Ann Street, named as one of the six most exclusive streets in the UK, and the surrounding area met with police at Stockbridge House to discuss how to combat the burglars.

Residents said they were told by officers that drug addicts seeking quick cash to fund their habits were believed to be behind the crimes.

Officers stepped up patrols in and around Ann Street, where properties often change hands for more than 1 million, in a bid to deter the thieves, but no arrests have so far been made.

Some of the break-ins have been carried out by "jemmying" open large windows in the two and three-storey Georgian townhouses, while in others suspects gained access through the extensive back gardens.

Ann Street resident Stuart Barrie, 85, a retired tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, said: "There has been a number of break-ins in the street, which is very worrying. Many of the homes are empty at the weekend and during the day, and that may be a reason why this has happened here.

"It seems to have been jewellery and money which has been stolen. They are obviously looking for things which can be easily carried away. The police also said they may be simply trying each house for weaknesses and moving on to the next one if they are not successful.

"The police have been giving us precautions to take and asking us to keep an eye on neighbouring homes."

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: "The meeting with the police was very well attended so people are obviously worried they might be next. The officers said they think it's addicts wanting money for drugs who are responsible and they're trying to catch them."

The first of the four break-ins in Ann Street took place on September 28, with the latest coming on October 18. A property in Danube Street was targeted on October 2 and another home in Upper Dean Terrace two days later.

A police spokeswoman said jewellery, cash and laptops were among the items stolen. She added:"Anyone with any information regarding the housebreakings, or any concern about home security, should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131-311 3131."
