Restoration work under way to improve pond life

RESTORATION work has now started on a pond in West Lothian.

Dedridge Environment Ecology Project raised funds to provide woodland management for Dedridge Burn Plantation in order to increase biodiversity and encourage native Scottish plants and trees to grow.

It also raised money to improve the Dedridge Pond and has consulted with specialist company Water Gems as to the best option.

The path areas have been improved and widened to accommodate parents with pushchairs and people in wheelchairs.

The work will cause around ten weeks of disruption and will involve draining and drying the pond, which could take up to three weeks alone. A range of attractive plants will be planted to create a reed bed, providing a perfect habitat for swans to nest in as well as moorhens, coots and mallards.

A spokesman for West Lothian Council said: "The disruption will take about ten weeks, but in the long run will provide an ongoing place of beauty for the community."
