Residents return to quake-hit homes

Police cordons around the most devastated section of New Zealand's earthquake-struck city of Christchurch were relaxed yesterday, allowing businesspeople and residents to salvage valuables.

Meanwhile, the government forecast that last month's quake, combined with one in September, will almost halve economic growth this year.
