Rescuer picks up first Ivor tribute prize

A NEW award commemorating Dunbar RNLI's late president Ivor McPhillips has been presented to an "outstanding" rescuer.

The inaugural memorial shield was awarded to Mark Grey, the station's inshore lifeboat helmsman, in recognition of his outstanding service.

Presenting the gong - and prize money - was the late president's family.

The honour will now be awarded annually to the crew member who goes the extra mile in the line of duty.

Mr McPhillip's son, Gerard, said: "My father dedicated some 33 years to the Dunbar RNLI and during that time he fought hard for the rights of the crew.

"He was always in awe of their dedication, courage and unselfishness, and therefore as a family we felt that some sort of memorial which recognised the crew would be entirely appropriate. We're sure that Ivor would have approved."

David Johnston, Dunbar station chairman, said Dunbar RNLI was grateful to the McPhillips family.

He said: "This is a wonderful idea and very much in keeping with Ivor's ethos."
