Repeat drink-driving offender sent to prison

A MAN has been jailed after being convicted of drink-driving for the seventh time.

Laszlo Varga, a Hungarian national, was held after police arrived at his home to investigate a report of domestic abuse.

They arrested him at the back of the house in Livingston, West Lothian, as he tried to make a get-
away on his motor scooter.

Livingston Sheriff Court heard that the drunken 43-year-old had earlier grabbed his partner, Szilvia Dobos, by the hair and held a glass shard at her throat.

Varga appeared for sentence at Livingston Sheriff Court yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to assaulting Ms Dobos on August 12 last year and driving with a breath alcohol count of 80 microgrammes – more than twice the 35mg legal limit.

Sheriff Martin Edington jailed Varga for 108 days and banned him from driving for 43 months.

He told the accused: “You have seven previous convictions for drink-driving including this one – five of them in Hungary.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s no alternative in the public interest but to deprive you of your liberty.”
