Around 75 firefighters tackled a fierce blaze which sent huge clouds of black smoke across the sky.

Residents of Renfrew, outside Glasgow, were advised to keep their windows and doors shut after a “large quantity” of tyres went up in flames at a recycling site last night.

Fifteen fire units were called to Meadowside Street at the height of the blaze, which was reported at around 10pm.

Around 30 firefighters remained at the scene today.

Incident commander William MacDonald, of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Crews working through the night successfully brought the fire under control but this is a protracted incident - firefighting operations are continuing and will likely be ongoing for some time.

“We currently have two high volume pumps and four standard appliances in attendance. All relief crews are now in place with about 30 firefighters still on scene.”
