Rebus set to return to TV, but for now its star remains a mystery

INSPECTOR Rebus is to make a return to television screens four years after the series was axed.

The Edinburgh-based detective created by Ian Rankin is making a comeback in the near future.

An STV source said: "We've always been desperate to bring Rebus back.

"But it didn't get recommissioned because there were too many other police dramas at the time.

"But The Bill being cancelled last summer has certainly opened the door for the return of Rebus."

Scots actors John Hannah and Ken Stott have both played the role, but television chiefs may bring in a new name for the new series.

The source said: "There is a strong feeling we might be on the lookout for a new Rebus. A few names have been floated." A spokeswoman for STV confirmed a comeback was on the cards: "We fully intend to bring Rebus back in the future. There are no firm plans yet, but it will return."
