Reality show 'star' jailed for attack

A TEENAGER who stopped hit TV show The Scheme being broadcast has been jailed for violently attacking a boy.

Steven McMurray, 18, punched the 14-year-old during a mugging at a bus station in April last year.

McMurray, from Kilmarnock, who appeared in the last two episodes of the BBC documentary, hauled his victim into a shelter at Hamilton bus station in Lanarkshire before demanding he hand over his wallet.

He had previously failed to appear at the town's sheriff court for sentencing and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was later seen on TV claiming he would be harshly dealt with as he had not shown up for sentencing.

Yesterday, solicitor Andy Iles, defending, said McMurray hoped to avoid prison as he had been given an offer of work.

He added: "Due to his appearance on the show, he was offered a job with a firm in Kilmarnock working as a joiner."

But he was ordered by Sheriff Douglas Brown to spend nine months behind bars.

His not guilty pleas to three further assaults on a man, a 15-year-old and a 14-year-old boy, as well as a breach of the peace charge, were accepted by prosecutors.

McMurray caused The Scheme to be shelved last year when he was arrested for another assault. Last July, he was locked up for four months for battering a bus passenger while out drinking to celebrate his birthday.

After he was sentenced, the BBC said the remaining episodes would be aired, but within days, the second assault case against him emerged, forcing the show off screens again.
