Rapist saw horror film before carrying out assault

A MAN who raped a woman in front of her wheelchair-bound mum had previously been watching horror movie Paranormal Activity 4.

Reece Fleming ordered the 18-year-old to strip before carrying out the attack and taunting her helpless mother with vile comments.

Fleming also demanded to know whether the 53-year-old mother had read the Bible and whether she knew how to get rid of demons.

The victim told the Evening News she was “petrified” during her ordeal in the Edinburgh house, but was more scared that “something would happen to my mum than me”.

She said that Fleming, 21, had previously watched supernatural horror film Paranormal Activity 4, and had begun stabbing the couch in the living room where the trio had sat watching TV moments before.

Fleming pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday to assaulting the girl and her mother, raping the daughter and forcing her to perform a sex act.

During the incident on November 28 last year, Fleming told the pair: “I’m no’ Reece, I’m David. Reece isn’t coming back,” which he later claimed to police was his split personality.

The victim, who cannot be named, said: “No words can explain how I felt that night. Petrified would probably be the best I can manage. I was more scared that something would happen to my mum than me.

“He had watched the movie Paranormal Activity 4 the week before. At first I thought he was taking the mickey and joking around. It was when he stabbed the couch that I realised he was being serious.

“It seemed like the whole thing was like TV or a movie. It didn’t feel real.

“My mum had a panic attack during it and I was trying to calm her down. I just kept thinking ‘stay calm’ because it will be over soon. The whole thing lasted about an hour or an hour-and-a-half.

“I’m just trying to get on with my life and not think about it. It’s something I want to put behind me.”

The court heard that Fleming had drunk about 14 bottles of beer before the attack.

Brandishing a silver-handled knife, he repeatedly told the women he would stab them if they did not do as they were told.

He then plunged his knife into the sofa four or five times and demanded sex.

After ordering the teenager to remove her clothes and raping her in front of her mother, Fleming made them promise not to tell “Reece” what had happened.

The court heard that Fleming fell on to a bed then opened his eyes minutes later, asking what the knife was doing there and what had been going on.

Eventually the mother managed to get to the bathroom and dial 999.

Fleming fled to his Edinburgh home but was caught there by police. He later told officers “I’m the worst person in the world”, adding that he needed an “alcohol counsellor”.

He also admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by stabbing a teddy bear and the mother’s wheelchair.

The takeaway delivery driver faces sentence next month after judge Lord Bannatyne called for reports and remanded him in custody.

Detective Inspector Douglas Moran, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: “This was a horrific, violent attack on a young woman. It has been a horrific ordeal for her and her family, and I hope they can take some comfort in this conviction, and they can begin to move on with their lives.”

Paranormal Activity 4 is a disturbing tale of demonic possession which took £92 million at the box office.
