Rail children spark fears

CHILDREN as young as six have been seen trespassing on railways amid a spate of obstructions being placed on the tracks.

Police have warned of the dangers after trains hit items including a mountain bike, shopping trolley and wheelie bin.

They said there is normally an increase in such incidents during the school summer holidays.

On Tuesday last week, children believed to be as young as six or seven were seen on the railway line near Wishaw station in North Lanarkshire, at around 2:10pm.

Inspector Sue Maxwell, of British Transport Police, said: "Unfortunately at this time of year we tend to see an increase in route crime offences reported."
