Raids uncover illegal workers in nail bars

Immigration raids have uncovered illegal workers employed in beauty salons in the west of Scotland.

Nine people from Vietnam were found employed in branches of USA Nail Bars in Glasgow and Clydebank.

UK Border Agency officers targeted USA Nail Bar in Dumbarton Road, Glasgow and USA Nail and Beauty in Alexander Street, Clydebank on Saturday morning.

The UK Border Agency said further checks are being carried out to see if they should be deported.

Both businesses have been issued with a civil penalty notice for employing illegal workers. If they can’t provide evidence that legally required checks were carried out before giving them a job they could be fined as much as £10,000 for each illegal employee.

Phil Taylor, regional director of the agency in Scotland and Northern Ireland, said: “We will not tolerate illegal working which threatens to damage our communities, it undercuts wages and exploits vulnerable workers. The UK Border Agency will act on intelligence to target those businesses which ignore the rules and remove those with no right to be in the UK.

“This operation is part of an ongoing clampdown on illegal working in Scotland to reduce the attractiveness of the UK to illegal immigrants. If people ignore our immigration laws, we will find them and remove them from the country.”
