Pupils' taste for business

BUDDING entrepreneurs at a rural primary school have launched their own business selling healthy food and drinks.

Saltoun Primary School's Snack Shack sells the products on a weekly basis before school starts and at break times.

Open to all pupils, staff, parents and the local community, it came into being following discussions between pupils about the cost of making smoothies to sell at the school's Smoothie Cafe.

Realising they weren't making a profit through the cafe, the pupils were keen to explore opening a school shop to see if they could make a profit through the enterprise.

Laura Birrell, acting headteacher at the East Lothian school, said: "We have been delighted with the enthusiasm the pupils have had for the Snack Shack."
