Pupils reach final of energy challenge

PUPILS from Dunbar Grammar School have won the regional final of a Scotland-wide energy challenge.

The young scientists scooped the Best Overall Project Award at the Go4SET Celebration and Assessment Day at Heriot-Watt University.

This year’s project was to research biomass as a possible source of heat and electricity to supply the school’s needs.

Competing against 11 other teams from all over Edinburgh and the Lothians, the pupils impressed the judges with their idea of a biomass generator powered by locally sourced wood chips.

They were presented with a trophy and cheque for £250 by Martin Grey from sponsors Viridor waste management, and will now go forward to the Scottish final at the Scottish Parliament in May.
