Pupils race to athletic test glory

PUPILS at Edinburgh’s St Joseph’s RC Primary School have won an athletics competition for the first time in more than 50 years.

Primary six and seven girls finished joint first with Fettes College to win the Queen Mary Jubilee Trophy for the first time since 1960 after scooping gold medals in the P6 and under relay, the P6 and under 80m sprint and the high jump.

It is part of the Edinburgh Primary Schools Sports Association Interscholastics competition, held at Meadowbank Stadium.

Among the stars of the day were the P6 relay team – Sulu Tolutinikaono, Natalia Kozlowska, Wengeswa Bhebhe and Fisyao Odubanjo – who won gold.

Teacher Phil Wilson said: “What makes the P6 relay team so special is that all four of them originate from different countries. Sulu is of Fijian descent, Natalia from Poland, Wengeswa from Zimbabwe and Fisyao from Nigeria.

“With our high jumper being from Scotland, this celebrates the success of the children working together in our school and the importance of team work and Global Citizenship.”
