Pupils airlifted to hospital after rock fall

TWO teenage girls were flown to hospital by helicopter after being hit by a rock on a remote Scottish island.

The 14-year-olds were taken to Broadford on Skye by mountain rescue after the incident during a school trip on Rum.

They had been on the first day of a 12-day trip when the "freak accident" happened on a walk.

The pupils from George Watson's College in Edinburgh were kept in overnight but were released the next day. Heather Wilson, head of the school, said that it appeared to have been a "freak accident".

She said: "We are very relieved that following assessment their injuries were not as serious as was first suspected."
