£40k for bike friendly route

AROUND £40,000 would be spent making the route between Edinburgh University's George Square and King's Buildings more cycle-friendly, under proposals unveiled by city council chiefs.

A series of "gateway treatments" costing around 20,000 are proposed by council officials, which could include advisory 20 miles per hour signs, text signs or cycle signs.

And up to 20,000 would also be spent sigposting an alternative route north of Relugas Road. Other options of removing parking or imposing a mandatory 20mph speed limit have been rejected.

The changes follow concerns raised by Green councillor Steve Burgess about safety for cyclists.
