Provost backs bar fundraiser for Australian flood victims

A FUNDRAISER to help those affected by the catastrophic floods in Australia has been given support by the Lord Provost.

The Oz Bar in Candlemaker Row expects to raise thousands for the Brisbane Disaster Fund tonight as part of its Australia Day event.

Pub landlord Iain Ponton said he had been overwhelmed with support for a raffle, with prizes being donated by local businesses and dignitaries.

Pub tycoons Kenny Waugh and Kevin Doyle, as well as Le Monde owner Billy Lowe have all donated prizes, and Lord Provost George Grubb is providing afternoon tea for two and a tour of the City Chambers plus a venture into Mary King's Close.

The floods earlier this month swamped 11,900 homes, killed 22 people and swept cars and trees into the rushing waters west of Brisbane.

Raising funds for those affected by the disaster and the massive cost of rebuilding, has been made the focus for Australia Day worldwide, and Mr Ponton said he was hoping to help out.

"We are running it over two nights," he said. "The first on Sunday brought a great response, exceeding expectation, and I hope the Australian Consul will drop in this week to pick up a fat cheque.

"The Oz Bar is donating 50p off every drink on each night. Brisbane's been a total disaster and people hear are truly sympathetic."
