Protest forces pollution test

NEW air quality checks will be carried out in the West End of the city in response to claims by residents that pollution has reached dangerous levels.

The city council conceded and agreed to implement air tests after months of campaigning by residents.

Campaigners claim more than 130,000 people are affected by the fumes, which stem from traffic being re-routed through the West End to aid the tram project's business case.

A spokesman for the council confirmed it is investigating where to establish monitoring locations in the area.
