Professor lectures on Antarctic lake

AN Edinburgh University professor is to deliver a lecture on a new project to explore a Antarctic lake situated below two miles of ice sheet.

Dr Neil Ross, a researcher who spent more than four months “on-ice” above Lake Ellsworth, will be speaking as part of this season’s Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Inspiring People talks on January 18.

Next December, explorers will drill through the ice sheet to cleanly access, measure and sample this unique lake environment.

They are hoping to examine the water and the mud at the bottom of the lake to help forecast climate change.

Dr Ross’ presentation will take place at 2.15pm at Appleton Tower, George Square.
