Probe squad set for city

A NEW squad of detectives being created to investigate murders and other high- profile inquiries is to be phased in from September.

The Major Investigations Team (MIT) of Lothian and Borders Police will replace the current set-up, where the cost of large-scale inquiries is covered by each division.

Police chiefs hope the MIT, which will have a dedicated staff of 90 people, will produce efficiency savings of around 2.6 million.

In a report to the police board, Chief Constable David Strang said that the new team would begin "phased implementation" from September 1.

The team will be based at existing stations in Edinburgh and Livingston, along with satellite incident rooms in the Capital and Dalkeith.
