Probe launched after Dundee scrapyard blaze spread to block of flats

AN INVESTIGATION launched today after 70 people were evacuated when a blaze started in a scrapyard spread to a nearby block of flats.

The residents were moved to safety after a fire spread to the roof of the flats.

Fire crews were called to the scene at around 5pm yesterday after the blaze started in the open in the Henderson Kerr Ltd scrap yard on Paterson Street in Dundee.

It then spread to nearby flats in Scott Court and emergency services evacuated residents. Around 40 firefighters tackled the blaze last night.

Fire engines were finished at the scene just after 11.12pm last night.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: "We are now at the investigation stage to find out what started the fire.

"It is a joint investigation by Tayside Police and Tayside Fire and Rescue Service."

Paterson Street remained closed this morning but the police spokesman said it could re-open later today after the area is assessed by firefighters.

Tayside Police also said that residents were not expected to be able to return to their homes until today at the earliest.

Many of the affected residents stayed with friends and family.

Alternative accommodation for those who needed it was provided by Dundee City Council and Hillcrest Housing Association, as both agencies have properties affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire has yet to be established and police appealed for information about the incident.

A number of roads in the immediate area were closed temporarily and diversions were put in place. No-one was injured as a result of the fire.
