An investigation has now been set up by the force in a bid to determine the cause of the accident.

The police van was being driven by an officer on duty, but the vehicle was not responding to a 999 call at the time of the crash.

A witness said the accident took place on the corner of Lauriston Place and Brougham Street when the police van, travelling from Earl Grey Street, collided with the taxi.
