Brian McElwain stripped off and refused to put his clothes back on to be taken up to the dock.

Livingston Sheriff Court was told McElwain had already spent a night in custody at a West Lothian hospital.

He was due to appear from custody on theft and bail offences, but, given his refusal to dress for the occasion, the case called in his absence.

Iain Smith, defending, asked for the case to be continued without plea until a doctor had seen his client.

McElwaine, 39, from Broxburn, West Lothian, is charged with breaking into Julie’s Baby Gift shopm in Broxburn’s East Main Street and stealing a quantity of baby clothing on Sunday June 7.

He is also alleged to have broken into the same shop the following day (Monday) and to have stolen a further “large quantity” of baby clothes.

He is also charged with two breaches of 7am to 7pm bail curfew preventing him from leaving his home at 23 Almondell Road, Broxburn, at night.

All four offences were alleged to have been aggravated by McElwaine being subject to bail orders dating from March 26 and June 5.

Sheriff Douglas Kinloch adjourned the case until Friday, June 12.

“Naked Rambler” Steve Gough has spent years in prison after numerous arrests for public nudity.

The former Royal Marine, from Eastleigh in Hampshire, has walked from John O’Groats to Land’s End wearing only boots, socks, a rucksack and sometimes a hat.

He has served most of his sentences in Perth Prison and Edinburgh’s Saughton Prison.
