Tyka Nelson told the i that a hologram of the musician, who died from an accidental painkiller overdose last year, could be used to replicate Prince’s run of 21 concerts at the London O2 Arena a decade ago.

Holograms have previously been used to bring stars such as Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur back to life for concert performances.

The technology required to create a 3D illusion is expected to become more widely employed as mortality claims an increasing number of rock and pop legends.

Ms Nelson, Prince’s only full sibling, announced that the O2 will stage the first ever official exhibition of the superstar’s memorabilia in October.

Instruments and stage outfits made to Prince’s exacting specifications, as well as hand-written lyrics are among the artefacts leaving Prince’s Paisley Park base in Minnesota for the first time.

Hologram Prince must pass quality test

Ms Nelson, 56, awarded a share of the singer’s £100m estate, said a Prince hologram could follow.

She said: “A hologram could be done as long as it is of excellent quality. It would have to allow the fans to experience Prince in the way he allowed us to experience his music.”

The family chose London to stage the exhibition because of the welcome Prince received during his 2007 O2 run.

It will include clothing from Prince’s Purple Rain tour and the 1988 LoveSexy tour and a Gibson L65 guitar that Prince used when he made his national television debut on American Bandstand in 1980.

Prince material released from vaults

Ms Nelson, a singer who released four albums, said it was her mission to release the recorded material Prince famously left in the Paisley Park vaults.

“I won’t leave this planet until all the music is out of the vaults and shared with Prince’s fans.

“I haven’t heard it all and I don’t know how much is finished but it is the Paisley Park mission to share it with his fans around the world.”

She declined to discuss whether Prince’s death from an opioid overdose could have been avoided. Born into a family of jazz musicians, who used to jam together, Tyka rejected Prince’s attempts to help her when she launched her own recording career.

But she has now recorded a tribute single to her brother and their parents, End Of The Road, at Paisley Park.
