Powers to fine drunk beach yobs haven't been used

Powers given to police allowing them to fine yobs drinking heavily on Portobello beach have not been used since they were introduced three months ago.

Officers were given powers through a local bylaw to hand out 40 fines to anyone drinking alcohol on the beach and causing disorder throughout the summer.

The move followed a May bank holiday weekend which was marred by binge drinking and fighting among a group of about 20 people.

A police spokesman today confirmed that officers were yet to hand out a fine under the legislation.

Portobello beach became the only area in Edinburgh where the local bylaw was being enforced.

The action was welcomed by members of Portobello's Pubwatch scheme.

Officers from Portobello's Safer Neighbourhood Team and council staff have been working to tackle drink-related antisocial behaviour through Operation Drifter.
