Power failure halts cinema screenings

CINEMA-GOERS and city centre residents were among the casualties of a 24-hour power cut that hit Lothian Road over the weekend.

The Edinburgh Filmhouse abandoned most of its Sunday programme and Monday matinees after the black out hit shortly before midday on Sunday.

At least 200 people were evacuated from the cinema at 9.45pm following sporadic power failures during most of the day.

All guests were refunded their ticket price.

Also affected were about 20 homes in Morrison Street and Lothian Road.

"We had no control over it," said Filmhouse marketing manager Kirsty Dickson. "We had to rely on information from Scottish Power. People seemed to understand that the circumstances were beyond our control."

Scottish Power has apologised for the disruption, caused by a damaged underground cable on Morrison Street.
