Potholes hit 44% of motorists

SCOTLAND'S pothole nightmare was confirmed yesterday in a survey that showed nearly half of drivers had been forced swerve to avoid one.

The poll by auto spares firm Kwik Fit, conducted this month, found that Scotland was the worst-affected area of the UK, with 44 per cent of motorists questioned having to take evasive action in the last year. Research by the firm also showed that 7.6 million motorists across the UK have suffered pothole damage to their vehicles in the past year.

It said this had cost more than 473 million in wheel and tyre repairs alone - nearly 100m more than in 2009.
