The government is coming under pressure to provide a financial “lifeline” for families receiving the benefit after research showed around two-thirds have been forced into debt during the coronavirus lockdown, with many turning to pay-day loans or credit cards to borrow money.

School meals could also be on the agenda after a campaign by England footballer Marcus Rashford prompted a government U-turn by Downing Street that will see parents claim free school meal vouchers for about 1.3 million children in England during the summer holidays.
