Thousands of people have taken to public spaces across Scotland in anti-racism protests.

Black Lives Matter: Protesters turn out in Edinburgh

The mass gatherings came in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement that has swept the world following the death of African American George Floyd, who was killed after a white police officer held him down by pressing a knee into his neck in Minneapolis on May 25.

Initial scenes suggest Scots appeared keen to keep protests peaceful and safe, with the majority of people wearing face coverings.

Clear social distancing seemed to be in place at the Edinburgh event, but scenes in Glasgow appeared to be more crowded.

Earlier today, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urged the public not to attend the protests planned across Scotland during the pandemic.

She said: “Right now, mass gatherings risk spreading #COVID19 so please protest in other ways.”
