Watch as Janey Godley parodies Nicola Sturgeon’s response to croquet question

“Croquet mate!? I cannae even get oot tae pick up a peever and play a game o’ beds.”

Nicola Sturgeon has shared a video from comedian Janey Godley, in which she re-voices the First Minister’s response to a question about croquet.

Earlier today, Ms Sturgeon unveiled her routemap for easing the lockdown in Scotland, outlining examples of sport which people would be able to play once it was implemented.

But a question from Tom Mason, the Conservative MSP for North East Scotland, was greeted with laughter in Holyrood when he asked Ms Sturgeon for clarity on sports like croquet.

Mr Mason, appearing via video call, said: “First Minister, you mentioned a number of non contact outdoor activities that can now be pursued.

“Are these specific or are they indicators of sports that can be pursued, as there are a number of other sports such as croquet, of which I have an interest, which are not mentioned there.”

Once the laughter had died down, Ms Sturgeon replied that the sports in her announcement were “illustrative” rather than “exhaustive”.

In Ms Godley’s redubbed video of the exchange, Nicola Sturgeon replies to Mr Mason’s question with exasperation, asking: “Croquet mate!? I cannae even get oot tae pick up a peever and play a game o’ beds.

“Croquet? Is that that game where you get a wee baw and you hit it wi’ a big hammer?

“Well I’m sure we’ll tae figure oot if we can let you oot tae play croquet soon enough.

“Ay, brilliant. F***ing croquet - Frank, get the door.”

The First Minister retweeted Godley’s video on Twitter, writing: “I just knew that today’s croquet moment wouldn’t escape the famous @JaneyGodley treatment (posted with my usual disclaimer about the language).”
