Video: Commonwealth Games and Scottish independence

SCOTSMAN journalist Stephen McGinty disputed the notion that Scotland’s success in claiming 30 medals in the opening four days of the Commonwealth Games would sway voters towards independence in today’s Scotsman Google+ Hangout.

The Scotsman launched the new Google+ platform at scotsman.com last week and joining presenter David Ferguson in the latest show were McGinty, Niall MacFarlane, a sports scientist at the University of Glasgow, and sports historian and lecturer Matt McDowell.

The panel discussed the medal haul of Team Scotland and whether it was realistic to expect the sporting success to continue in the wake of the Games. McGinty insisted that a major positive impact on the minds of voters ahead of September’s Referendum was as likely as thousands being persuaded to vote no by the failure of the Scottish football team to qualify for major finals.
