US President-elect Joe Biden shares phone call with Boris Johnson

United States President-elect Joe Biden has spoken to Boris Johnson over the phone today, three days after he was projected as the winner of the 2020 election.

The Prime Minister and the Democrat spoke at 4pm on Tuesday amid concerns the pair may not have a smooth relationship because of controversies surrounding Brexit.

After the call, Mr Johnson told followers on Twitter: “I just spoke to @JoeBiden to congratulate him on his election.

“I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our countries and to working with him on our shared priorities – from tackling climate change, to promoting democracy and building back better from the pandemic.”

The news comes despite rumours that Mr Biden has a long-held grudge against the Prime Minister ever since Mr Johnson claimed in 2016 that Barack Obama’s “part-Kenyan” heritage had driven him towards anti-British sentiment.

Joe Biden served as Mr Obama’s Vice President for eight years.

Earlier today a Biden aide told US news network CNN that the President-elect “believes deeply in the special relationship, and he looks forward to making that partnership even stronger.

“To be sure, our British allies are indispensable partners across the range of challenges"

Earlier, Downing Street blamed a “technical error” after a message congratulating Mr Biden on his election victory appeared to have been written over an earlier version congratulating Donald Trump.

Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the message, which was posted on Boris Johnson’s official Twitter page as a photograph, contained remnants of a message addressed to President Trump that was still visible if the brightness and contrast were changed.
